How do I get the most out of my distortion pedal?

So I got a BOSS DS 2 distortion pedal for my guitar. But I was just wondering how to get more out of it. The problem is sometimes it sounds great and other times not so great and I don't understand why. My guitar is a Tom Delonge Signature Epiphone ES 333 and my amp is a Line 6 Spider iv 30 watt. It sometimes sounds very muddy and clouded as if there was way too much b but its not set high. Is there a balance u need to get or whats the deal? All the EQ on the amp are at 12 o'clock. I mostly use the turbo setting for stuff like blink and green day and the first setting for foo fighters and stuff. Please help me out. Thanks.
